Pineapple plant leaves is one of the original plant-based leather alternatives and originated on pineapple farms in the Philippines, Bangladesh and the Ivory Coast to repurpose pineapple leaves that would otherwise become waste. It takes 480 pineapple leaves to make one square meter of Pineapple leather.
Fibres are extracted from pineapple leaves then cleaned, dried, and mixed with a natural acid made from corn.  The colour and top leather-like grain, is created using GOTS-certified pigments and water-based PU resins. There are many international brands that use Pineapple alternative leather, including Hugo Boss and Paul Smith on bags, shoes and accessories.

For every kilogram of pineapple produced, up to three times as much waste is created, so pineapple leaves make a great feedstock. Once the fibre has been separated from the leaves, the remaining waste can used as fertilizer. Carbon footprint using these renewable resources and manufacturing processes can be reduced by over 40%. By working directly with pineapple farmers, this helps with the social impact due to giving the farmers additional income from utilising the pineapple waste which would need to be discarded.  The PU content ranges from 10% –  36% which makes it non-biodegradable.
